PocketMail Corporate

Cafe Society

If you're looking for a device that allows you to handle email, fax and SMS Messages while you're travelling in Australia or over-seas, you might consider the PocketMail Composer. It's essentially a basic keyboard-driven pocket organiser that's fitted with an acoustic coupler that allows you to dial up either on a conventional or mobile phone, and retrieve and send messages. Synchronising with your desktop Outlook address book is simple, and in addition to having its own internet address, it will also retrieve copies of email in up to three POP email accounts (although it will not handle attachments).

I'm impressed with its sheer utility and it's particularly handy when you're travelling overseas. It costs $150 for the device, and you can buy a monthly subscription. Details at www.pocketmail.com.au

I set up a couple of friends with one of the units recently for a trip through France, Austria and Germany. They found it simple to set up, and they were able to send and receive email using an international telephone card for less than a minute of connection time. I'm trying to convince Paul Budde that for all but a few of his emails - the system won't handle attachments - PocketMail might just be an alternative to that trek to the internet cafe.
